THE BIRDS OF THE SOUTHERN OCEAN

The skua dives. The albatross
Flies over seas so mountainious
The thought of it will overwhelm.
The young boy standing at the helm.

Should he dare to turn his face around.
Aware of that unspoken sound:
The fathomless, the swallowing.
The green, green towers following?

Where is the earth? Where is the sun?
The wheel spins now. The boy has run.
The rigging groans. The three masts fall.
Can god be in this world at all?

And there is nothing but the sea.
And mad birds crying endlessly.
